The fallout from adverse events is a significant financial drain on the NHS. It is therefore essential that incidents are investigated thoroughly in order to ensure preventative action is taken to avoid recurrence. It is also essential that individual and groups of incidents are resolved as quickly and cost-effectively as possible.

Reducing costs through early management and resolution

Of the 8.5 million inpatient episodes per annum, 10% or 850,000 admissions lead to an adverse event. Each adverse events costs the NHS £247 in additional bed days which amounts to the NHS spending a staggering £2 billion per annum on such additional bed days as a result of adverse events.

Early investigation and resolution of incidents helps to avoid complaints and claims, and fosters a better relationship with an organisation's client group. An early apology and explanation of events can avoid a claim being made. Early resolution of claims makes it more likely that matters are resolved directly with the injured party and/or their family thus saving significant sums in both legal fees and the quantum of recompense paid.
