The financial provision set aside by the NHS to fund the direct costs of claims has risen year on year from £2.31 million in 1998 to £5.89 billion in 2003. The number of claims has risen from 392 in 1996/1997 to 6,251 in 2003/2004.

The amount of money paid by the health and social care organisations to fund claims continues to increase. It is therefore essential that organisations have a robust claims management process to ensure that claims are resolved at the earliest opportunity.
